Totally ubiquitous yet completely mysterious in origin, the phrase has been around since at least the late 17th Century. The specific inspiration for the use of the phrase comes from the etherial and distant introduction to the popular The Mamas & The Papas song and this block-like but curved letterforms were inspired by the jangley sixties sound.

What better way to visualise a phrase about darkness and light than to get the torches out in the woods? The effect is a really warm, glowing and soft set of letterforms contrast against amongst the finely detailed foliage… fishing wire included.

The Darkest Hour is a collaborative piece between award-winning photographer, Andy Pilsbury and our very own Tommy Morrison.
